Iowa Mourns Loss of Perry High School Principal Who Died After School shooting
The community of Perry, Iowa, is in mourning after losing Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger, who succumbed to his injuries 10 days after bravely intervening during a school shooting. The tragic incident occurred on January 4th when a 17-year-old student opened fire at the high school, resulting in the death of a sixth grader and injuries to seven others, including Marburger. The principal, known for his dedication and heroism, attempted to calm the shooter, allowing students to escape.
Marburger, 56, had served the school for nearly three decades and was highly regarded for his commitment to student safety and well-being. His family announced his passing on Sunday, and the Perry Community School District expressed profound sorrow over his death. The district described Marburger as a tremendous leader and a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Marburger’s daughter, Claire Marburger, paid tribute to her father’s love and kindness in a heartfelt Facebook post, emphasizing his role as a devoted family man and educator. She highlighted the lessons he taught them about love and described him as a “gentle giant” and an “amazing dad and just amazing person.”
Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff, acknowledging Marburger’s sacrifice. She expressed her deepest condolences to his wife and family, recognizing his selfless and heroic actions in protecting his students.
The shooting, which took place before school started, also claimed the life of 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff. The perpetrator, armed with multiple weapons, was stopped before causing further harm. The investigation into the shooting and the motives behind it is ongoing, with law enforcement and media outlets examining the shooter’s background.
In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Marburger’s family. As of early Monday, it had raised $172,840, with an update acknowledging the unfathomable hardship the family will continue to face.
