South Amboy Teen Arrested for Fatal Hit-and-Run on Route 35

19-Year-Old Arrested for Hit-and-Run Incident Resulting in Death

In a tragic incident that took place on Saturday, January 13, a young female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Route 35 south and Bay Avenue in Brick Township. The victim was immediately rushed to Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical for treatment. The authorities have identified the suspect vehicle as a 1999 Ford Explorer, and it is believed that 19-year-old Mark Carey, Jr., from South Amboy, was behind the wheel at the time of the accident.

Thanks to a joint investigation involving multiple agencies, Carey’s Explorer was identified as the suspect vehicle. Following this breakthrough, Carey was apprehended at his residence in South Amboy without any resistance. He was then taken to the Brick Township police headquarters for processing before being transferred to the Ocean County Jail. Carey is currently being held there, awaiting a detention hearing.

The charges against Carey are severe and include Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in the Death of Another, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury or Death, Failing to Report an Accident, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, and Failure to Maintain Lane of Travel, all in connection to the same crash. If convicted, Carey could face serious consequences for his actions.
