Odisha Police have apprehended a woman in connection with the murder of a hotelier in Bhubaneswar. The suspect, identified as Sunki Rana, also known as Soni, was arrested for allegedly killing Biswajit Nayak, a hotelier from the Balianta area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. This development was confirmed by Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh on Tuesday.
The incident unfolded when Nayak was discovered dead under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Hirapur village a few days ago. Following an investigation, it was revealed that the accused, Sunki, who hails from Jharsuguda, had previously been convicted for the murder of her sister-in-law in 2005. She had served a 12-year jail term for the crime.
After her release, Sunki had been residing at an ashram in Puri for the past three years. During her stay, she had crossed paths with Nayak’s mother and had begun assisting her. Later, she developed a relationship with Nayak after meeting him through his mother. Sunki frequently visited Nayak’s house with the permission of the ashram’s head.
On December 30, 2023, Sunki arrived at Nayak’s house and stayed there. However, she continuously received phone calls from Puri urging her to return. Consequently, she requested Nayak to allow her to go back to Puri, but he refused to let her leave him.
A heated argument between the couple ensued on January 12, during which Sunki suddenly attacked Nayak with a hard wooden stick, leading to his death. In an attempt to cover up the crime, Sunki concealed the blood-stained weapon and her bloodstained clothing. Later that evening, she fled the scene by taking an auto-rickshaw to Puri. However, the authorities managed to apprehend her in Puri.
During the investigation, the police confiscated the blood-stained wooden stick, the weapon used in the crime, as well as the clothing worn by the accused. Additionally, they also seized Sunki’s mobile phone as part of the evidence.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, as the motive behind the murder remains unclear. The police continue to delve deeper into the case to establish a clearer picture of the events leading up to the tragic incident.
