Phoenix Police and Silent Witness Seek Public’s Help in Fatal shooting Case
Phoenix police and Silent Witness held a joint press conference on Wednesday, appealing to the public for assistance in locating a suspect involved in a fatal shooting. The victim, 27-year-old Leonel Pineda-Valdez, tragically lost his life in the incident.
The nonprofit organization, Silent Witness, works closely with the Phoenix Police Department to identify suspects in criminal cases. They often offer cash rewards to individuals who provide tips that lead to an arrest.
According to a police news release, the shooting took place on October 30, 2022, around 11 p.m. in the vicinity of 67th Avenue and Thomas Road. Pineda-Valdez was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, which had collided with a fence at a nearby business.
Sergeant Brian Bower, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department, explained that Pineda-Valdez had become involved in an argument between an unknown man and woman in the Walgreens parking lot. Multiple gunshots were fired, and witnesses reported seeing a suspect flee in a dark-colored sedan. No weapons were found on Pineda-Valdez, and initial investigations suggest he was not the aggressor in the incident.
During the press conference, Pineda-Valdez’s family joined the police and members of the press. They displayed photos of Pineda-Valdez, affectionately known as Leo, portraying his joyful moments with loved ones. His fiancé, Mary Martinez, recalled his caring nature and how he treated her children as his own.
Pineda-Valdez’s brother, Eduardo, spoke of the impact his brother had on his life. He emphasized the unconditional love and support Pineda-Valdez provided, especially in accepting Eduardo’s queerness. Eduardo shared an emotional memory of their last walk together, highlighting the void left in his life.
Pineda-Valdez’s mother, Leonarda Valdez, tearfully expressed how her son was always there for her and cherished their time together. She lamented the loss of her son and the pain caused by his senseless death.
Sergeant Bower appealed to the community for any information that could help solve the case. He emphasized that even the smallest detail could lead to the apprehension of the person responsible and bring some solace to the grieving family.
