Man Found Dead Behind St. Clair Grocery Store: Investigation Underway
In a tragic incident that has left the community of St. Clair, Missouri, shocked and saddened, a man was discovered dead behind a local grocery store on Wednesday morning. The St. Clair Police Department responded to a call just after 6:50 a.m. regarding an unresponsive person at the Country Mart in the 900 block of Plaza Drive.
Upon arrival, officers found the lifeless body of 54-year-old Steven Everhart lying face down in the snow behind the store. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived shortly after and confirmed that Everhart had passed away. The police detectives who were called to the scene found no signs of trauma or foul play.
To determine the cause of Everhart’s death, the Franklin County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy. Investigators have already spoken with an employee from the neighboring Dollar General store, who reported seeing Everhart the night before around 9 p.m. According to the employee, Everhart was known to be a local homeless person.
The employee recounted that while on a smoke break, he discovered Everhart behind the Dollar General building. Everhart appeared to be intoxicated and visibly shaking. Concerned for his well-being, the employee brought Everhart inside the store to warm up and provided him with a cigarette and some food. Everhart remained in the store for about an hour until closing time.
Before leaving, the employee asked Everhart if he had a place to go, to which Everhart vaguely responded in the affirmative but did not disclose his destination. The last sighting of Everhart was when he was observed walking east on nearby Treva Lane.
The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing, and the authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The St. Clair community is mourning the loss of Steven Everhart, a man who had fallen on hard times and was in need of support and assistance.
