Indiana State Police Trooper Hospitalized After Being Hit by SUV While Assisting Stranded Driver on Interstate 65 in Indianapolis
An Indiana State Police trooper is in serious condition after being struck by an SUV while helping a stranded driver change a flat tire. The incident occurred on Saturday night on Interstate 65 in Indianapolis, according to WNDU.
Trooper Azariah Keith, 22, had just finished changing the stranded driver’s tire when the accident occurred. Another trooper had blocked the left lane to ensure Keith’s safety while he worked. However, as Keith was loading his equipment back into his car around 9:20 p.m., a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox swerved around the trooper and crashed into a concrete median barrier before hitting Keith and his police car.
Keith sustained critical injuries and was immediately transported to the hospital. Currently, he is in serious but stable condition. Despite the severity of his injuries, Keith is expected to survive, as reported by WTHR. He was awake and alert and even had the opportunity to speak with his family.
The driver of the SUV, identified as 22-year-old Armaandeep Singh, was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury. Singh allegedly had a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.16, which is twice the legal limit. Police also suspect that Singh was traveling at a high rate of speed before the collision.
The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for nearly three hours while authorities processed the scene. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to assist and protect the community.
This unfortunate incident highlights the importance of responsible driving and the potentially devastating consequences of driving under the influence. It also emphasizes the need for drivers to follow traffic regulations and exercise caution when approaching emergency vehicles.
Our thoughts go out to Trooper Azariah Keith and his family during this difficult time. The Indiana State Police will continue to investigate the incident and ensure that justice is served.
