Peel police’s Criminal Investigation Bureau has made an arrest in connection with a shooting that took place in Brampton last year. The incident occurred on March 6, 2023, when a man was walking his dog along the Etobicoke Creek Trail. Out of nowhere, an unknown man approached him from behind and began firing multiple shots in his direction.
The victim was hit by the gunfire but tried to escape. However, the suspect chased him down and attempted to shoot him again at close range. Luckily, the suspect’s handgun malfunctioned, giving the victim an opportunity to fight back and forcing the suspect to flee the scene.
The suspect made a quick getaway to a nearby stolen Ford F-150, where an accomplice was waiting inside. Meanwhile, the victim managed to run to safety and call for help. Thankfully, he survived the attack.
After the incident, the abandoned Ford pickup truck was found by the police and thoroughly analyzed for any potential evidence that could lead to the identification of the suspects.
Through their investigation, the authorities were able to identify the shooter as Alexander Mills-Smith from Toronto. However, it is worth noting that Mills-Smith is now deceased. On the other hand, the accomplice and co-accused, 21-year-old Illia Ayo, has been taken into custody for unrelated charges.
Ayo has been charged in connection with the shooting and is facing charges of attempted murder using a firearm, being an occupant of a motor vehicle with knowledge of a firearm, and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.
