Sussex County Governor’s Task Force Arrest Laurel Man on Drug Charges After Traffic Stop

A Laurel man, identified as Edsel Wootten III, was arrested by Delaware State Police for felony drug charges following a traffic stop on Thursday night in Laurel, Delaware.

The incident took place on January 25, 2024, around 10:50 p.m., when members of the Sussex County Governor’s Task Force, along with Delaware Probation and Parole officers, were patrolling the West Street area in Laurel. While on patrol, they noticed a blue Ford Focus fail to signal when turning into First Stop gas station at 114 West Street. Detectives initiated a traffic stop and approached the vehicle, where they made contact with the occupants. One of the occupants was identified as Edsel Wootten III, who was on probation.

During the investigation, detectives and probation officers observed a bundle of suspected heroin in plain view in Wootten’s pocket. Consequently, Wootten was taken into custody without incident. Further search of Wootten’s person and property led to the discovery of various drugs and drug-related items, including approximately 23.20 grams of methamphetamines, 5.67 grams of crack cocaine, 18.86 grams of cocaine, 1.764 grams of heroin, four Naloxone sublingual films, a digital scale, and $344 in suspected drug proceeds.

Wootten was transported to Troop 4, where he was charged with multiple crimes, including possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and subsequently committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a cash bond of $18,300.
