Arrest Made in Connection to Killing of US-Based Lecturer in Osun State
The Osun State Police Command has announced the arrest of Eniola Oyeyode, a prince from Oyo, in connection to the murder of Richard Idowu, a United States American-based lecturer and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party. Idowu was shot at Oyeyode’s residence in Ejigbo, Osun State on Saturday evening and tragically passed away while receiving treatment at a private hospital.
According to a security source close to the Osun State Police Command, Oyeyode was moved from Ejigbo to Osogbo on Sunday. The spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest of Oyeyode in a statement obtained in Osogbo.
Opalola stated that the incident occurred after the 50th Coronation Anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin. Oyeyode had instructed one of his civilian guards, Hammed Abdul Jelili, to fire his double-barrel gun into the air to test its functionality. However, instead of firing into the air, the guard shot directly at Idowu, causing his untimely death.
The prince, Eniola Oyeyode, who gave the order to his guard, has been arrested and detained. The Commissioner of Police, CP Bzigu Dali Kwazhi, has appealed to the public, particularly the residents of Ejigbo, to remain calm as a discreet investigation is underway.
The incident has left the community in mourning and has caused tension among the residents. It took place in the private residence of Oyeyode, who was celebrating his father’s 50th anniversary on the throne. Idowu, who was part of the coronation anniversary, was summoned to a meeting at Oyeyode’s residence after the celebration.
Eyewitnesses reported that gunshots were heard as the attendees were leaving the premises. Idowu was hit on the leg and succumbed to his injuries while being treated at a private hospital in Ejigbo. Afiz Lawal, a Personal Assistant to the deceased, revealed that the shooting occurred when Eniola Oyeyode asked a local hunter to release gunshots into the air, but the shots were fired towards the ground, striking Idowu.
The Commander of the Osun Command of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, Ahmed Nureni, has denied any involvement of his group in the incident and called for a thorough investigation into the killing.
Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and has directed law enforcement agencies to determine the causes of the incident. He has also dispatched a high-powered delegation to Ejigbo to restore calm and ensure a thorough investigation. The governor emphasized the need for regulations on the usage of local guns to enhance public safety at public functions.
In conclusion, the arrest of Eniola Oyeyode in connection to the killing of Richard Idowu has brought some measure of justice to this tragic incident. The investigation will shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and hopefully, prevent similar occurrences in the future.
