Nigerian Lecturer and PDP Chieftain Shot Dead in Osun State
A tragic incident unfolded in the Ejigbo area of Osun State, as a United States-based Nigerian lecturer and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Mr. Richard Idowu, was shot dead. The shocking incident occurred between 8:00 and 8:30 pm on Saturday, causing grief and tension among the local residents.
The unfortunate incident took place in a private residence belonging to Prince Eniola Oyeyode, the son of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode, who was celebrating his 50th anniversary on the throne. It was during this celebration that Idowu, who was a part of the coronation anniversary, was summoned to a meeting at Eniola’s house on Inisa Road in Ejigbo.
According to an eyewitness, who requested anonymity, the meeting included a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Ayodele Asalu, and another individual identified as Mr. Timothy. As the meeting concluded and the attendees were leaving, gunshots were heard. Tragically, Idowu was hit in the leg and succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a local hospital in Ejigbo.
A personal assistant to the deceased, Afiz Lawal, who was present during the incident, shared his account of what transpired. He explained that after attending the coronation party, they were about to head back to Osogbo when Prince Eniola asked them to come to his house for a brief meeting. As the attendees dispersed and were entering their vehicles, Lawal overheard Prince Eniola instructing a local hunter to fire shots into the air. However, instead of firing into the air, the shot was directed towards the ground, hitting Idowu in the leg.
Lawal expressed uncertainty whether the incident was planned or accidental but emphasized that he witnessed the events unfold firsthand. Idowu’s remains have been deposited at the morgue of UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital in Osogbo.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile, the Commander of Osun Command of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, Ahmed Nureni, emphasized that none of their members were involved in the incident and called for a thorough investigation into the killing.
In response to the tragedy, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. He urged law enforcement agencies to determine the causes of the incident and ensure that justice is served. Governor Adeleke also dispatched a high-powered delegation, including the Commissioner of Police and other government officials, to visit Ejigbo and restore calm in the community.
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, and the investigation aims to provide answers and prevent any potential escalation of violence. The governor has extended his condolences to the families of both the deceased and the shooter, emphasizing the need for regulations regarding the usage of local guns to enhance public safety at public functions.
