Nigerian Lecturer and PDP Chieftain Shot Dead in Osun State
In a tragic incident that has left the community in mourning, a United States-based Nigerian lecturer and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Richard Idowu, was shot dead in the Ejigbo area of Osun State. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, between 8:00 and 8:30 pm, and has caused tension among the residents.
The shooting took place in the private residence of Prince Eniola Oyeyode, the son of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode, who was celebrating his 50th anniversary on the throne. Idowu, who was part of the coronation anniversary, was summoned to a meeting in Eniola’s residence located along Inisa Road in Ejigbo.
According to an eyewitness who spoke with The PUNCH on Sunday, the meeting was attended by a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Ayodele Asalu, and one other person identified as Mr. Timothy. After the meeting, as the attendees were leaving the premises, gunshots were heard and Idowu was hit on the leg. He was rushed to a private hospital in Ejigbo but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Narrating the incident, a Personal Assistant to the deceased, Afiz Lawal, said, “When we returned to Osun from Ogun State where Governor Adeleke took a Chieftaincy title, we moved to Ejigbo for 50th coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin. Immediately after the coronation party, we were about to start coming to Osogbo when Prince Eniola told us to go to his house along Inisa Road in Ejigbo for a brief meeting.”
Lawal further explained that after the meeting ended, the attendees were dispersing and entering their vehicles when Prince Eniola asked a local hunter to release gunshots into the air. However, the hunter mistakenly fired towards the ground, hitting Idowu in the leg.
The incident has sparked demands for a thorough investigation into the killing. The Commander of Osun Command of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, Ahmed Nureni, stated that no member of the group was involved in the incident.
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered an immediate investigation into the killing and counter-killing at Ejigbo. He has also dispatched a delegation to the town to ensure calm and to continue the investigation.
The tragic death of Mr. Richard Idowu has sent shockwaves through the community, and the governor’s call for an investigation aims to bring justice and prevent any further violence. The safety of citizens, especially at public functions, is of utmost importance, and regulations on the usage of local guns are expected to be issued by the State Police Command.
