Dheeraj Gupta : Chemical Leak in Baddi’s Pharma Sector: 14 Workers Unconscious

In a recent alarming development, a group of 14 workers, predominantly from Uttar Pradesh, found themselves in a dangerous situation at a pharmaceutical industry in Baddi. The incident occurred when a chemical drum, being moved from the first floor to the second, accidentally fell, leading to a hazardous gas leak. This resulted in the workers losing consciousness and requiring immediate medical attention. Out of the affected individuals, 12 were women and 2 were men.

Identification of the leaked substance revealed it to be methylene chloride, a solvent commonly used in tablet coating processes within the pharmaceutical sector. Dheeraj Gupta, the Managing Director of the industry, explained that the workers started fainting due to the chemical exposure, prompting swift action at Civil Hospital Baddi. Subsequently, ten workers were transferred to PGI, Chandigarh, while four were taken to Katha Hospital from Civil Hospital Baddi for further treatment.

Baddi’s ASP Ashok Verma confirmed the incident, highlighting it as a case of workers falling unconscious due to a chemical leak. An investigation by the police is currently underway, with all affected workers receiving necessary medical care. This unfortunate event comes on the heels of a tragic fire in Baddi that claimed nine lives the previous month, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced safety measures in industrial environments.

The incident also serves as a reminder of a similar accident at the NR Aroma Perfume Industry in Jharmajri, Nalagarh, still fresh in people’s memories. It underscores the inherent risks associated with industrial operations and emphasizes the importance of stringent safety standards across all sectors. Fortunately, there have been reports of the affected workers showing signs of improvement, with expectations of their discharge from the hospitals in the near future.

The rapid response from industry management and medical authorities played a vital role in containing the impact of the incident. However, it serves as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance and adherence to safety protocols necessary to prevent such occurrences in the future.
