Augusta University : UGA Campus Tragedy: Nursing Student Found Dead near Lake Herrick, Investigation Ongoing

An Augusta University nursing student was tragically found dead near the University of Georgia (UGA) Intramural Fields on Thursday, February 22, 2024, sparking an investigation by authorities. Campus Police Chief Jeff Clark revealed that a concerned friend of the victim had reported her missing after going for a run at the Intramural Fields.

After receiving the call, police immediately initiated a search and discovered the student’s lifeless body with visible injuries in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick on the UGA campus. Foul play is suspected in this disturbing case, leaving the community in shock and disbelief.

The deceased student, who was a nursing student at Augusta University’s College of Nursing campus in Athens, had previously attended the University of Georgia until the spring of 2023. The tragic news prompted the cancellation of classes on the Athens campus, with normal operations set to resume on Monday, February 26.

In response to the incident, UGA issued a statement urging students, faculty, and staff to download the UGA Safe app for enhanced safety measures. They emphasized the importance of traveling in groups and remaining vigilant while the police continue their investigation.

Additionally, the university mourned the loss of another student, Wyatt Banks, who tragically took his own life just a day before the nursing student’s death. The campus community is grappling with the weight of these dual tragedies, and support resources have been made available for those in need of assistance in processing their grief.

As the investigations continue and the community mourns the loss of these young lives, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing probe. The University of Georgia remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students as they navigate these challenging times.
