Unauthorised Screening of Banned Documentary Sparks Controversy in Hyderabad

A banned documentary titled ‘Ram Ke Naam’ has caused uproar in Hyderabad, as it was screened without police permission at Marley’s Joint Bistro Restaurant in Defence Colony, Neredmet. The unauthorised event, organized by a group called Hyderabad Cinephiles, has sparked protests and accusations of religious insensitivity.

Outside the restaurant, Hindu protestors gathered to express their discontent, alleging that the organizers’ actions were against Hinduism and hurt religious sentiments. The incident has raised concerns, with some protestors claiming that such activities are an attempt to instigate communal violence, particularly ahead of the inauguration of the Ram Mandir.

The Neredmet police have filed a case and are actively investigating the matter. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the complainant, the incident occurred on January 20, 2024. The complainant and his friends visited Marley’s Joint Bistro Restaurant and discovered that the banned documentary was being screened. Attendees allegedly engaged in derogatory discussions about Hinduism and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

Upon inquiring about the event, the management revealed that it was organized by “Hyderabad Cinephiles,” with individuals named Anand, Piyush, Parag, Srija, and others identified as the organizers. The complainant further stated that the screening was intentionally arranged to create communal issues ahead of the Ram Mandir event.

The FIR also mentions that the owners of Marley’s Joint, Sowmith Reddy and Srujan, cooperated with the event. The complainant has urged the police to take necessary action against the organizers and the restaurant owners.

A case has been registered under Section 290, 295-A r/w 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and the investigation is currently underway at PS Neredmet.
