In a shocking incident, a homeless man has been arrested by the police for stealing a car that had a 4-year-old child inside. The car was later found abandoned in Downtown Long Beach, thanks to the quick thinking of two young women who saw an Amber Alert on their phones.
According to authorities, the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the area of First Street and Linden Avenue. The child was in the car with one of their parents when the parent stepped away from the vehicle, leaving it running. Seizing the opportunity, a man identified as 34-year-old Timothy Wood got into the car and drove away.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued an Amber Alert for the missing child at around 5:46 p.m., prompting the Long Beach police to launch a search operation. Meanwhile, Reagan Dunn and Yenni Lu, both 20 years old, were in the vicinity and received the Amber Alert on their phones.
Without wasting any time, Dunn and Lu decided to drive around the Downtown area to see if they could spot the stolen vehicle. To their surprise, they found the stolen Honda Accord near The Pike Outlets, with nobody around it. They immediately called 911 and informed the authorities.
The police arrived at the scene and safely rescued the child from the back seat of the car. The child was then reunited with their relieved parents. Using security cameras in the area, the police were able to identify Wood as the suspected thief. They located him near the spot where he had abandoned the vehicle and took him into custody.
Wood now faces charges of kidnapping, child endangerment, and vehicle theft. His bail has been set at $100,000, and the investigation is still ongoing, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
