In a significant development, the Delhi Police’s Southern Range Special Cell announced the arrest of Hanif Sheikh, a long-time fugitive and key member of the banned organization Student’s Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The arrest comes after more than two decades of evading authorities in connection with unlawful activities and sedition charges.

Background Information:
The incident took place in New Delhi, where Hanif Sheikh had been on the run for over 22 years since a case was registered against him under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in 2001. He was also declared a proclaimed offender by a trial court in 2002.

Arrest Operation Details:
The Southern Range Special Cell team worked tirelessly for four years to track down Hanif Sheikh, who was also known as Haneef Hudai. They followed leads from SIMI magazine ‘Islamic Movement’ and finally zeroed in on his location in Bhusawal, Maharashtra, where he was working under a new identity as a teacher in an Urdu school.

Arrest and Charges:
After a scuffle and attempted escape, Hanif Sheikh was apprehended by the police team. He is now facing charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The police have also revealed that he was involved in collecting funds for supporting the agendas of SIMI and Wahadat-e-Islam.

Significance of SIMI:
The Student’s Islamic Movement of India was founded in 1976 with the aim of establishing Dar-Ul-Islam (Land of Islam) and promoting ‘Jihad’ and ‘Shahadat’ as its core principles. Due to its involvement in anti-national activities, the organization was eventually banned by the Government of India.

Ongoing Investigation:
Authorities have stated that further investigation into Hanif Sheikh’s activities is underway. They plan to probe his roles in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as verify his connections with other extremist groups.

This arrest marks a significant milestone in the efforts to combat extremist activities and uphold the rule of law in the country. The Delhi Police’s relentless pursuit of Hanif Sheikh demonstrates their commitment to bringing fugitives to justice and ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
