A 16-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Scarborough in September 2023, according to Toronto police.
The incident took place on September 24, 2023, when authorities received reports of a shooting in the Morningside Avenue and Danzig Street area. Upon arrival, police discovered a man who had been shot. He was immediately rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and sadly succumbed to them on October 8, 2023.
The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Joshua Bernard-Reis, a resident of Toronto. The loss of his life has left the community in shock and mourning.
In the following weeks, police made an arrest in connection with the murder. Jermaine Goode, a 19-year-old man from Markham, was taken into custody on November 6, 2023. He was charged with first-degree murder and appeared in court to face the accusations.
However, the investigation took a new turn when another individual was arrested on Thursday. With the assistance of Peel Regional Police, authorities apprehended a 16-year-old male, whose identity remains protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The teenager now faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, where the case will proceed. The incident has prompted discussions about youth involvement in violent crimes and the need for effective measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
The location of the shooting, Scarborough, is a vibrant and diverse neighborhood in Toronto that has unfortunately been marred by incidents of gun violence in the past. Local communities and authorities continue to work together to address these issues and ensure the safety of residents.
As the justice system moves forward with the legal proceedings, the family and friends of Joshua Bernard-Reis mourn the loss of a young life cut short, while the accused awaits his day in court.
