Agartala, Tripura: In a horrifying incident that has left the community in disbelief, four individuals have been apprehended by the Tripura police for allegedly savagely beating a young man and subsequently pouring salt and chilli powder on his wounds. The distressing event unfolded at the BBI playground in Dharmanagar of North District on January 18, when a group of assailants attacked Sagar Shuklabaidya.
The incident came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media, prompting swift action from the authorities. The police have taken cognizance of the video and have arrested the four accused individuals, namely Koushik Datta, Tanmoy Debnath, Sumit Debnath, and Gobil Bhattacharjee. These perpetrators have been presented before the court, with the police assuring that the remaining individuals involved will also face the consequences of their actions in due course.
The authorities have registered cases against more than five people under Sections 341, 342, 325, 326, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Expressing his concern over the incident, North District Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhanupada Chakraborty stated, “It is a sad incident. We immediately lodged an FIR [first information report] and started an investigation. Among the FIR-named individuals, we have arrested four. We shall arrest the rest at the earliest.”
According to reports, Sagar Shuklabaidya allegedly fell victim to the assault after being caught stealing the mobile phones of the accused youths. However, such an act of retribution does not justify the excessive violence inflicted upon him.
