In a shocking incident recently captured on body camera footage, deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Houston, Texas, were seen opening fire through a window while responding to a reported break-in. The video, which was released by the sheriff’s office, shows two officers approaching an upstairs apartment in the early hours of February 3rd.
As the officers approached the apartment, they noticed a window screen that had been removed and set aside in front of the building. After knocking on the door and announcing themselves as the Sheriff’s Office, one of the officers moved away from the door to join the other officer at the top of the staircase.
Suddenly, a car alarm went off, prompting one of the officers to say something to the other before both officers began shooting. One of the officers even reloaded their weapon and continued firing before the two retreated downstairs to inform their colleagues via radio that shots had been fired.
According to the narrative provided by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the deputies responded to a call at 90 Uvalde Road at 2:10 a.m. on February 3, 2024. The caller reported that someone was inside her apartment.
The woman who was shot, later identified as Eboni Pouncy, was with a friend in the apartment after they had broken the window to enter because they had forgotten their keys. Pouncy sustained a total of five gunshot wounds to her leg and torso. Thankfully, none of her vital organs were struck, but the long-term effects of her injuries are still unknown.
Ben Crump, Pouncy’s attorney, called the released video evidence of unnecessary and excessive force. He demanded that the deputies involved be held accountable for the terrible injuries inflicted upon Pouncy.
Both officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the sheriff’s office and local district attorney investigate the case. The incident will also be referred to a grand jury.
This incident highlights the need for law enforcement agencies to ensure proper training and protocols are in place to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
