A man from Hollywood has been charged with abusing the 911 emergency system after confessing to creating a false report of road rage. His motive? To provoke a police response that would ultimately lead to officers shooting him.
The Coconut Creek Police Department arrested Calix Green, 41, on January 15 following a chaotic sequence of events. Green had called 911 to report a road rage incident involving gunfire between two Dodge Chargers on the 3600 block of West Sample Road.
Posing as a concerned bystander, Green provided live updates while allegedly following the vehicles, even claiming to hear gunfire and see a weapon. Responding to the call, Coral Springs Police issued a ‘Be On the Lookout’ (BOLO) alert to nearby agencies. Eventually, they stopped a black and yellow 2019 Dodge Charger, driven by Green, in the 8300 block of West Sample Road.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the cellphone used to make the 911 call was registered to Green. During questioning, Green admitted to fabricating the entire story with the intention of being shot by the officers.
The false report prompted an extensive law enforcement response, with ten officers and three sergeants from both the Coconut Creek and Coral Springs Police Departments being deployed to the scene. Green was subsequently arrested by CCPD officers and taken to the Broward County Main Jail. Upon arrival, he underwent mental health evaluations.
It is concerning that individuals would resort to such extreme measures to provoke a fatal police shooting. The incident highlights the need for better mental health support and resources in our communities. Fabricating a report not only wastes valuable police resources but also puts innocent lives at risk.
