Cyclist Hit by Car in Farmville: Woman Hospitalized After Collision on Wesley Church Road

A Farmville woman is currently receiving medical treatment at ECU Health Medical Center after being struck by a car while riding her bicycle this afternoon. The incident took place around 2:30 pm on Wesley Church Road, located to the east of Farmville, North Carolina.

The cyclist has been identified as Liza Hardy-Braz, who is the wife of Steven Hardy-Braz, a prominent advocate for cycling and disabled safety. According to Steven, his wife was the last of three cyclists riding in single file on Wesley Church Road when the collision occurred. He mentioned that several cars had already passed them when his wife was unexpectedly hit by a red car.

The impact of the collision caused Liza to be thrown off her bike, resulting in a broken passenger side mirror on the car involved. Furthermore, the bike itself was left severely damaged in multiple places.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol has initiated an investigation into the crash, aiming to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. This unfortunate event comes just a few months after Steven Hardy-Braz himself suffered a serious injury in a similar incident, where he was struck from behind while riding his own bicycle.

In North Carolina, state law mandates that vehicles must provide cyclists with at least four feet of distance when passing them on the road. Failure to abide by this regulation can result in severe consequences, as demonstrated by the recent collision in Farmville.

The location of the crash, Wesley Church Road, is a well-traveled route in the area, connecting Farmville to other nearby communities. The incident has raised concerns among local residents regarding the safety of cyclists on this particular road, prompting discussions about potential improvements to ensure the well-being of all road users.

As the investigation continues, it is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and exercise caution when sharing the road with cyclists. By adhering to traffic laws and maintaining a safe distance, we can all contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone on the road.

Let’s prioritize the safety of cyclists and work towards preventing such accidents from occurring in the future.
