Joseph Holmes : “Man Who Died In Custody Identified”

A man has tragically died while in police custody in Largo, MD. The incident occurred on February 16, when officers responded to a 911 call reporting a suspicious person knocking on doors in the area. Upon arrival, an officer found the man in the road, who then walked onto a nearby lawn and laid down. Concerned for his well-being, the officer called for an ambulance. Two more officers arrived, and the man was placed in handcuffs to be transported to a hospital for evaluation.

Unfortunately, the man went into medical distress after being handcuffed. Despite immediate emergency aid from the officers and medics on the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly after. The man has been identified as 61-year-old Joseph Holmes from Clinton.

The officers involved in the incident have also been identified. Corporal Alyssa Tomaselli, Corporal Mark Price, and Officer Marvin Marks, all assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, were present at the scene. Additionally, Officer Andre Brooks from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Police Department, with 34 years of law enforcement experience, was also in attendance.

The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Body-worn camera footage from the officers present will be reviewed as part of the investigation, with the expectation that it will be released within 20 business days.
