The incident took place on the East Coast Road near Sethubavacharitham when a speeding car collided with a culvert, resulting in the accident.
The local police reported that the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the parapet of the culvert near Manora Fort on the East Coast Road. The impact of the collision caused extensive damage to the front portion of the car.
The victims of the accident were a group of eleven individuals from Indira Nagar in Thoothukudi district who were traveling in the SUV to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni. The Sethubavachathiram Police have registered a case and an investigation is currently underway.
The deceased have been identified as Y. Packiyaraj (62), A. Gnanambal (60), M. Rani (40), and M. Chinnapandi (40). Their bodies have been transferred to the Government Hospital at Pattukottai for postmortem examinations.
The seven injured individuals have been identified as P. Mariya Selvaraj (37), M. Fathima Mary (31), M. Santhosh Selvam (7), P. Shanmughathai (53), B. Saraswathi (50), B. Ganapathy (52), and S. Latha (40). They have been admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for necessary medical treatment.
